Uzoma Dozie is a Nigerian banker, technology entrepreneur, investor and advocate for financial inclusion, best known as the founder and CEO of Sparkle, a digital financial services company focused on individuals, retailers and small businesses in Nigeria.
Born on November 2, 1969, in London, United Kingdom, Dozie began his professional career in banking before becoming one of the prominent executives in Nigeria’s financial sector. He later transitioned from traditional banking into technology, founding Sparkle after serving as the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Diamond Bank.
Early life and education
Dozie was born into the family of Nigerian entrepreneur and banker Pascal Dozie, who founded Diamond Bank. His early life included periods in the United Kingdom, Uganda and Nigeria.
He studied chemistry at the University of Reading, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree. He subsequently earned a master’s degree in chemical research from University College London and an MBA from Imperial College London.
Although his academic background was in science, Dozie eventually built his career in banking and financial services.
Banking career
Dozie began his banking career in Nigeria and worked at institutions including Guaranty Trust Bank and Citizens Bank before joining Diamond Bank, the financial institution founded by his father.
At Diamond Bank, he held several senior positions across corporate, commercial and retail banking. His responsibilities included financial control, business development and leadership of regional and retail banking operations.
In 2014, Dozie became Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Diamond Bank. During his tenure, the bank placed significant emphasis on expanding its retail banking operations and using technology to improve customer access to financial services.
His tenure at Diamond Bank ended following the bank’s merger with Access Bank. The transaction was completed in 2019 and became one of the significant developments in Nigeria’s banking industry at the time.
Founding Sparkle
Following his departure from Diamond Bank, Dozie moved further into the technology sector.
In 2019, he founded Sparkle, a digital financial services platform designed to combine banking and technology to provide services to individuals, retailers and small and medium-sized businesses.
The idea for Sparkle was influenced by Dozie’s experience in retail banking. He had observed challenges faced by small businesses and consumers when interacting with traditional financial institutions and sought to build a technology-driven alternative.
Sparkle provides digital financial services alongside tools designed for businesses, including payments, invoicing, payroll and other financial-management services. Dozie describes the company as more than a conventional bank, positioning it as a financial and lifestyle ecosystem.
In an interview with Nairametrics, Dozie emphasised that Sparkle operates as a licensed microfinance bank while using technology to deliver its financial services.
Technology and financial inclusion
Dozie has remained an advocate for the use of technology to expand access to financial services in Nigeria.
His approach combines his experience in traditional banking with technology, data and digital platforms. Through Sparkle, he has focused particularly on individuals, retailers and small businesses that require simpler ways to access and manage financial services.
Sparkle’s leadership profile describes Dozie as a technology entrepreneur and banking veteran whose interest in using technology to expand access to opportunities was a major motivation behind the company’s creation.
His views on technology and financial inclusion have also featured in Nigerian and international business publications, where he has discussed the changing relationship between traditional banks, fintech companies and digital financial services.
Supporting Nigeria’s technology ecosystem
Dozie’s activities extend beyond Sparkle.
He founded TechFest in 2018 as a platform intended to bring together leaders from Nigeria’s technology and business sectors. He has also been associated with Tech Turks, an online interview programme focused on technology entrepreneurs and the challenges of building technology businesses in Nigeria.
He has also invested in Nigerian technology startups through his investment activities, including an angel investment initiative known as Black Knights.
Dozie has participated in discussions and initiatives around financial inclusion, technology, entrepreneurship and the development of Africa’s digital economy. He has also served on the board of Women’s World Banking.
A transition from banking to technology
Dozie’s career represents a transition from conventional financial services into digital banking and technology entrepreneurship.
After more than two decades in the banking sector, his decision to establish a technology-led financial institution positioned him at the intersection of traditional banking and Nigeria’s rapidly developing fintech ecosystem.
His experience at Diamond Bank provided an understanding of financial services and retail banking, while Sparkle became an avenue for applying technology, data and digital infrastructure to financial services.
Today, Dozie is recognised primarily for his work at the intersection of banking, technology, entrepreneurship and financial inclusion, with Sparkle representing the central focus of his post-banking career.
