Adegoke “Goke” Olubusi is a Nigerian technology entrepreneur, healthcare innovator and investor best known as the co-founder and CEO of Helium Health, a healthcare technology company working to digitize healthcare delivery across Africa and the Middle East. His career combines engineering, technology, entrepreneurship and healthcare, with a particular focus on using digital tools to improve how healthcare providers manage patients, records, payments and operations.
Early Life and Education
Olubusi is Nigerian-born and developed an interest in technology and entrepreneurship early in his career. He studied Electrical, Electronics and Communications Engineering at Morgan State University, graduating in 2013. He subsequently earned a Master of Science in Engineering/Industrial Management from Johns Hopkins University in 2016.
His combination of engineering and management education provided a foundation for the career he would later build at the intersection of technology, business and healthcare. He also participated in Y Combinator’s S17 programme, an experience that exposed him to the global startup ecosystem and helped shape his approach to building technology companies.
Early Technology Career
Before becoming a healthtech entrepreneur, Olubusi worked in the technology and financial-services sectors. He developed payment systems and gained professional experience at major companies including Goldman Sachs, eBay and PayPal.
His experience at these companies exposed him to large-scale technology systems, digital payments and the ways software can transform traditional industries. Rather than remaining solely within the corporate technology environment, he eventually turned his attention toward solving challenges closer to home in Nigeria.
From Technology to Healthcare
Olubusi’s transition into healthcare technology was driven by an interest in addressing long-standing problems within African healthcare systems. He and his co-founders identified the inefficiencies created by paper-based records and fragmented healthcare processes.
In 2015–2016, Olubusi and Dimeji Sofowora began developing what became Helium Health. The company initially operated under the name OneMedical before adopting the Helium Health name. Tito Ovia later joined the founding team. The company’s first hospital deployment took place in December 2016.
Founding Helium Health
Helium Health was established with the goal of helping healthcare facilities move from manual systems to digital platforms. Its technology has included electronic medical records, hospital management systems, billing and analytics, alongside other digital healthcare services.
Under Olubusi’s leadership, Helium Health expanded beyond simply digitizing medical records. Its products now include HeliumOS, a digital solution for healthcare facilities; HeliumDoc, a doctor-booking platform; MyHelium, which gives patients access to their health records; and financial products such as HeliumCredit and HeliumWallet.
The company’s broader objective is to create digital infrastructure that connects different parts of the healthcare ecosystem, including patients, healthcare providers and payers.
Expanding Digital Healthcare Across Africa
Helium Health has grown from its Nigerian beginnings into a broader African and Middle Eastern healthcare technology company. According to the company’s current profile, it serves more than 1,000 healthcare facilities and 10,000 health workers, while facilitating hundreds of thousands of patient experiences each month.
Its expansion reflects Olubusi’s approach to healthcare technology: rather than treating digital health as a single application, Helium Health has developed a collection of tools covering healthcare administration, patient management, medical records, appointments, payments and healthcare financing.
Investment and Startup Ecosystem
Olubusi has also participated in the wider African startup investment ecosystem. Harvard’s Africa Development Conference describes him as a founding partner of MAGIC Fund, an early-stage venture capital firm focused on investing in high-growth startups.
Through this work, his activities have extended beyond healthcare into broader technology entrepreneurship. His investment interests have included startups operating in areas such as financial technology and digital services.
This has allowed him to play two complementary roles within the technology ecosystem: building a healthcare technology company himself while also supporting other entrepreneurs developing technology businesses.
Recognition
Olubusi was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in the healthcare category in 2019. Forbes’ profile of Helium Health identified Olubusi, Tito Ovia and Dimeji Sofowora as the company’s co-founders.
He has also participated in major global technology and business forums, including events at Harvard, Stanford and UC Berkeley, where he has discussed African innovation, healthcare and technology.
In 2022, Helium Health announced a $30 million Series B funding round, which Olubusi described as an important milestone in the company’s effort to digitize African healthcare.
Contribution to Nigerian Health Technology
Adegoke Olubusi’s work is significant within Nigeria’s growing healthtech ecosystem because it demonstrates how technology can be applied to practical healthcare challenges. Through Helium Health, his work has focused on areas such as digital medical records, healthcare facility management, patient access, billing, healthcare financing and data.
His career also illustrates the increasing connection between Nigeria’s technology sector and healthcare. By bringing experience from engineering, financial technology and major international technology companies into healthcare, Olubusi has built a career around applying digital innovation to one of Africa’s major development challenges.
Legacy and Continuing Influence
Adegoke Olubusi continues to be associated with technology entrepreneurship, healthcare innovation and investment. His journey from engineering education and international technology companies to building a healthcare technology company in Africa, reflects the increasing role of Nigerian entrepreneurs in developing solutions for local and international markets.
Through Helium Health and his involvement in the startup investment ecosystem, Olubusi has contributed to the development of a technology-driven approach to healthcare delivery. His story represents the growing generation of Nigerian entrepreneurs using software, data, digital finance and technology infrastructure to address healthcare challenges across Africa.
