Mark Essien is a Nigerian technology entrepreneur, software developer, product manager, and startup investor best known as the founder and CEO of Hotels.ng. He is regarded as one of the pioneers of Nigeria’s online travel and e-commerce industry and has played an important role in developing technology and software talent in Africa.
Born on December 18, 1980, in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, Mark Essien spent his early years in Nigeria. He attended Monika Kindergarten, a school owned by his mother, before continuing his secondary education at Federal Government College, Ikot Ekpene. His early exposure to education and technology eventually developed into a strong interest in computer programming and software development.
Mark later moved to Germany for his higher education. He earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Engineering from Beuth University of Applied Sciences in Berlin and subsequently obtained a Master of Science degree in Computer Science from the Free University of Berlin. His academic background gave him a strong foundation in software development, computer engineering, and technology product development.
Before becoming a prominent African entrepreneur, Essien had already developed considerable technical experience. While in Germany, he created Gnumm, a file-sharing software that was later acquired by Snoopstar, a German company. He also developed a software-based MPEG encoder whose clients included major organizations such as The Walt Disney Company and the United States Armed Forces. These early projects demonstrated his ability to develop practical technology products for international users.
His entrepreneurial journey took a major turn when he began looking for opportunities to build a technology company in Nigeria. He identified the hospitality and travel industry as an area where technology could solve significant problems. At the time, booking hotels in Nigeria was largely dependent on traditional, offline processes. Essien saw an opportunity to make hotel discovery and reservations easier through the internet.
In 2013, he officially founded Hotels.ng, an online hotel-booking platform designed specifically for the Nigerian market. The business initially began as a simple online directory of hotels. Essien tested the website’s ability to attract users before developing it into a full booking platform. He later returned to Nigeria and worked directly with hotels, initially visiting properties and building the company’s database from the ground up.
Hotels.ng grew rapidly and became one of Nigeria’s leading online travel platforms. The company attracted investment from Spark, the investment vehicle associated with entrepreneur Jason Njoku, and later received additional funding from international investors including EchoVC and Omidyar Network. Its growth demonstrated the potential of locally built technology businesses to address large African markets.
Beyond Hotels.ng, Mark Essien has also focused heavily on developing Africa’s technology workforce. He founded HNG Internship, a free coding and technology training programme designed to help young Africans develop practical software-development skills and become employable in the technology industry. According to Essien’s own biography, the programme has helped more than 10,000 Africans enter coding jobs.
His contribution to the technology ecosystem extends beyond entrepreneurship. Essien has consistently promoted the idea that African companies should develop products specifically suited to African markets while also building technology talent capable of competing globally. His journey from software developer to technology CEO has made him an example of how technical expertise can be transformed into a successful African technology business.
His achievements have earned him recognition beyond Nigeria. In 2015, he was included in Forbes’ list of Africa’s 30 youngest entrepreneurs. He has also been recognized within Nigeria’s technology ecosystem for his contribution to online travel, entrepreneurship, software development, and talent development.
Mark Essien’s story is ultimately one of technical expertise, entrepreneurial experimentation, and African innovation. From developing software in Germany to creating one of Nigeria’s best-known online travel platforms and establishing a major coding internship programme, he has demonstrated how technology can be used to build businesses while creating opportunities for other young Africans.
