Olubankole Wellington, popularly known by his stage name Banky W (and credited in films as Banky Wellington), is a multifaceted Nigerian-American entertainer, entrepreneur, and public figure whose influence spans music, film, business, and politics. He was born on March 27, 1981, in New York City, United States, to Nigerian parents of Yoruba descent, and moved back to Lagos, Nigeria, with his family at the age of five.
Growing up in Nigeria, Banky W developed an early passion for music through singing in his church choir, a foundation that shaped his soulful style and lyrical depth. He later returned to the United States for higher education, earning a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in New York, where he combined academics with a growing commitment to music. While still in college, he co-founded Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E.) in 2002, a record label that would later become one of the most influential platforms in modern Nigerian music.
Banky W’s music career took off in the early 2000s, marked by a smooth fusion of R&B, pop, and Afro-R&B, often centered on themes of love, relationships, and self-reflection. He released his debut EP Undeniable in 2003, followed by his first studio album Back in the Building in 2005, which featured the hit single My Regret. His subsequent albums, including Mr. Capable (2008), The W Experience (2009), R&BW (2013), Songs About U (2017), and The Bank Statements (2021), solidified his reputation as one of Africa’s leading R&B artists.
Over the years, he delivered popular songs such as Ebute Metta, Yes/No, Made for You, Strong Ting, and Mi Re Do (Cocoloso), gaining both local and international recognition. Beyond his personal artistry, Banky W’s greatest industry impact came through E.M.E., which played a pivotal role in discovering and nurturing major Nigerian stars like Wizkid, Skales, Shaydee, and Niyola.
In 2018, the label was restructured into a broader creative, talent-management, and marketing agency, reflecting his evolving vision for the entertainment business.In addition to music, Banky W successfully transitioned into acting and filmmaking, earning acclaim for his performances in Nollywood.
He made his early film appearance in The Return of Jenifa (2011), but gained widespread popularity for his role as Dozie Onwuka in The Wedding Party (2016), one of Nigeria’s highest-grossing films, and its sequel The Wedding Party 2: Destination Dubai (2017).
His acting range was further showcased in films such as Up North (2018), where he played a more dramatic role, as well as Sugar Rush (2019) and the critically praised Elevator Baby (2019). He has also worked behind the scenes as a producer and executive producer, contributing to storytelling, film production, and creative direction across both music and cinema.
Beyond entertainment, Banky W has demonstrated a strong commitment to public service and civic engagement. In 2019, he ventured into politics by contesting for the House of Representatives seat for Eti-Osa Federal Constituency under the Modern Democratic Party (MDP).
Although he did not win the election, his campaign resonated widely, especially among young Nigerians, for its emphasis on accountability, good governance, and youth participation in politics.Seeking to deepen his understanding of governance and policy, he later pursued and earned a Master’s degree in Policy Management from Georgetown University after relocating to the United States with his family in 2024–2025..
In his personal life, Banky W married Nollywood actress Adesua Etomi-Wellington in November 2017, and their union has been widely celebrated as one of Nigeria’s most admired celebrity marriages. The couple has two sons together.
He has also been open about his successful battle with skin cancer, using his experience to inspire conversations around health, resilience, faith, and personal growth.
