Patrice Tlhopane Motsepe, born on January 28, 1962, in Orlando West, Soweto, South Africa, is a South African billionaire businessman, mining magnate, and football administrator. He is best known as the founder and executive chairman of African Rainbow Minerals (ARM),  one of South Africa’s largest diversified mining companies with interests in gold, platinum, base metals, and ferrous metals.

Motsepe grew up in Soweto during apartheid, where racial segregation and economic barriers shaped his early life. He earned a law degree from the University of Swaziland and then studied at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. After working as a lawyer, he became the first black partner at the law firm Bowman Gilfillan in 1994. That same year, he founded Future Mining, a contract mining services company, and shortly after began acquiring low-producing gold mines. These acquisitions became the foundation of African Rainbow Minerals, which later listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and expanded significantly under his leadership.

Motsepe’s success in mining made him South Africa’s first black billionaire and one of Africa’s most prominent business figures. Beyond mining, he has diversified his interests through holding companies including African Rainbow Capital, and he has held leadership roles in other major firms such as Sanlam and Harmony Gold. In 2003, he also took majority ownership of the Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club, one of South Africa’s most successful soccer teams.

In March 2021, Motsepe was elected President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), becoming one of the continent’s top football administrators and a vice president of FIFA. Outside his business ventures, he is known for philanthropy and for signing the Giving Pledge, committing to give away a significant portion of his wealth to charitable causes.

Patrice Motsepe’s journey from a young law graduate in Soweto to a billionaire industrialist and influential leader reflects his strategic vision, resilience, and leadership in both business and sport across Africa.
