Taaooma, born Maryam Apaokagi on February 28, 1999, is one of Nigeria’s most influential comedians and digital creators, a young woman who turned simple, relatable stories into a nationwide movement. Born in Kwara State and raised partly in Namibia, she later returned to Nigeria to study Tourism and Travel Service Management at Kwara State University. Her journey into comedy began in 2015 when she learned video editing from her partner (now husband), Abula. What started as a small hobby quickly grew into a passion, fueled by her knack for creating everyday characters Nigerians instantly recognize especially the unforgettable “African mother.”
Her rise to fame exploded in 2019 when one of her skits went viral. It was simple, funny, and painfully accurate and Nigerians couldn’t get enough. From that point, Taaooma became known for her unique style: acting multiple roles in one skit, switching effortlessly between mother, father, siblings, and even neighbours. She built a brand rooted in real Nigerian experiences, from strict parenting to hilarious home situations. Beyond comedy, she runs her own food business, Chop Tao, and is part of The Greenade Company, a production outfit that further expands her creative influence. Over the years, she has bagged major recognitions like the Gage Award for Best Online Comedian and the 25 Under 25 Social Entrepreneur Award.
But Taaooma’s story is more than viral videos. It’s a lesson in consistency, authenticity, and using creativity to build a career from scratch. She married Abula in 2021, and in 2024, she welcomed her first child, milestones that Nigerians celebrated with her like family. Through her content, businesses, and influence, Taaooma has shown that young Africans can turn talent into global relevance. Her journey proves that storytelling, humour, and originality can open doors, inspire millions, and redefine what is possible in Nigeria’s entertainment scene.
