Uche Pedro (born 26 July 1984) is a Nigerian entrepreneur and the founder and chief executive officer of BellaNaija, a digital media company focused on entertainment, fashion, lifestyle, weddings and African popular culture. She founded BellaNaija in 2006 while studying in Canada, initially operating it as an anonymous blog before developing it into a larger digital media business.

Early life and education

Uche Pedro was born Uchenna Jennifer Eze in Nigeria and completed her primary and secondary education in the country. She later moved to Canada, where she studied at the Ivey Business School at Western University, earning an Honours Business Administration degree with distinction in 2006. She subsequently attended the Harvard Kennedy School, where she completed a master’s degree in public administration in 2020.

Career

Before establishing BellaNaija, Pedro worked with companies including Shell Canada and Cadbury, with experience spanning Canada, the United Kingdom and Nigeria.

In 2006, while at university in Canada, she created BellaNaija, initially as a blog covering Nigerian entertainment, fashion and popular culture. Pedro has said that living outside Nigeria made her aware of the limited international exposure of Nigeria’s emerging entertainment and fashion industries and influenced her decision to create a platform that would showcase Nigerian stories.

The website’s readership grew rapidly, eventually reaching millions of readers. In 2009, Pedro publicly identified herself as the person behind BellaNaija and left her position at Cadbury to work on the business full-time.

BellaNaija subsequently expanded beyond its original blog format into a digital media company with brands including BellaNaija.com, BellaNaija Weddings and BellaNaija Style. The company describes Pedro as its founder and CEO and says she has more than 15 years of experience building digital experiences and leading creative teams.

Recognition

In 2013, Pedro was named the International Young Media Entrepreneur of the Year in Nigeria by The Future Awards Africa and the British Council. The award recognised young people working in media who demonstrated entrepreneurial and leadership abilities and potential to influence their sector.

In 2014, Forbes included Pedro among its 30 Most Promising Young Entrepreneurs in Africa. At the time, BellaNaija was described as a major Nigerian online lifestyle, entertainment and fashion publication.

Pedro was also selected in 2018 as one of the African participants in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Gates Letter campaign, where she interviewed Bill Gates and asked him about the relationship between development work and cultural values.

Harvard’s Ash Center has also profiled Pedro’s work, particularly her use of digital media to promote civic engagement and social issues in Nigeria.
