Daniel Mminele is a distinguished South African banker, financial strategist, and business leader with more than three decades of experience spanning central banking, commercial banking, financial markets, public policy, and corporate governance. He currently serves as Chairperson of Nedbank Group, having been appointed to the board in May 2023 and becoming chairperson in June 2023.
Born in Phalaborwa, South Africa, in 1965, Mminele received part of his education in Germany. He obtained a German Banking Diploma from Sparkasse Paderborn and later earned professional qualifications from the Chartered Institute of Bankers in London. His early training established the foundation for a career in international banking and financial management.
Mminele began his banking career in Germany with Westdeutsche Landesbank Girozentrale, working in Düsseldorf and London. After returning to South Africa in 1995, he worked at Commerzbank and African Merchant Bank, gaining experience in corporate banking, credit-risk analysis, project finance, and structured finance.
In 1999, Mminele joined the South African Reserve Bank (SARB). Over nearly two decades, he held several senior positions, including Head of the Financial Markets Department and Executive General Manager. In 2009, he was appointed Deputy Governor, a position he held for two five-year terms until 2019. During this period, he served on important bodies including the Monetary Policy Committee and Financial Stability Committee and represented South Africa in international financial forums.
In January 2020, Mminele became Group Chief Executive of Absa Group and Absa Bank, becoming the first Black African to hold the position. Although his tenure ended in April 2021, the appointment represented an important milestone in his distinguished banking career.
Mminele later expanded his leadership into climate finance and sustainable development. In 2022, he served as Head of South Africa’s Presidential Climate Finance Task Team, where he helped coordinate work around the country’s Just Energy Transition Partnership and the development of the Just Energy Transition Investment Plan.
At Nedbank, Mminele brings extensive experience in banking, financial services, climate finance, macroeconomic policy, corporate governance, and strategic planning. His leadership reflects a growing emphasis on connecting financial-sector expertise with sustainable economic development across Africa.
His contributions have received international recognition. In 2018, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier awarded him the Great Order of Merit for his contribution to German-South African relations. In 2019, he received the Lifetime Achiever Award from the Association of Black Securities and Investment Professionals.
Today, Daniel Mminele remains an influential figure in African finance, combining experience in central banking, commercial banking, investment, climate finance, and corporate leadership.
